Black Series’ Rugged Inspirations
Margo Hayes became the first woman to climb 5.1a, a grade only 60 men in the world have climbed. As one of the best climbers of all time, she’s bound to compete in the next Olympics, the first to feature a climbing competition. Inspired by her vast sheet of accomplishments, The North Face has created the urban-equivalent of her extreme climbing gear to provide its wearer with world-class athletic outfits for their every day.
Matty Hong is a 26-year old climber from Boulder, Colorado. He became the fourth American to climb 5.15b, followed by multiple ticks of La Rambla and Joe Mama in 2017. Matty and his father, Steve, compose the strongest father-son climbing team in the US, where they continue to establish 5.14s in Rifle’s Stockboy’s Revenge (5.14b). Matty also inspired North Face in the creation of the Black Series techwear collection.
The North Face History
The North Face was founded in 1966 in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood as a mountaineering retail store. Their founders had a core philosophy: to serve all those who bonded with the outdoors through exploration and to inspire others to delve into the wildlands and help conserve them.
In 1968 the company relocated to the other side of San Francisco Bay and began manufacturing its brand of technical mountaineering apparel and equipment. The North Face brand had cultivated a vast following, eager to explore the most far-flung, still largely untouched corners of our planet, and so the mantra was born: “Never Stop Exploring.”
True to their mantra, The North Face sponsored several expeditions that took their followers to these exotic locations to explore and study what we can do to protect these distant regions.
By the end of the 1980s, The North Face had become the #1 supplier of high-performance outerwear, skiwear, sleeping bags, packs, and tents in the United States. The 1990s saw the debut of their Tekware collection, designed to provide rock climbers, hikers, trail runners, and other outdoor enthusiasts with highly functional clothing for their adventures.
Today, 50 years after its creation, The North Face delivers a wide array of performance apparel, equipment, and footwear designed to push your performance to the next level. To not only explore the vast wildlands but also navigate through our modern concrete jungles and their nook and crannies. Backed by the world’s most accomplished climbers, mountaineers, skiers, snowboarders, and explorers, The North Face continues to be the #1 choice for extreme exploration gear today.
The Black Series and Futurelight techwear by The North Face features a unique crossover between extreme exploration gear and urban techwear fashion. The North Face is world-renowned for their high-performance outdoor gear. Their marketplace dominance there somewhat overshadows the fact they’re one of the most popular techwear brands as well!
By using the same technology and materials experienced climbers in the Himalaya wear and the fashionable look that many celebrities have popularized over the years, Techwear users looking to remain warm in style will want to acquire some of The North Face Black Series pieces.
